Tributes Paid to Beloved Somerset Artist Known for Quirky, Colourful Paintings

The art community and locals across Somerset are mourning the loss of Mike Jackson, a cherished artist celebrated for his vibrant and distinctive watercolour paintings. Mike passed away on 14 April 2026 at the age of 63 after a battle with kidney cancer.

A resident of South Petherton since 1998, Mike was widely known for his compelling artworks depicting quirky houses, playful animals, boats, and ocean scenes. His cheerful and unconventional style earned him a loyal following in Somerset towns such as Wells, South Petherton, and Yeovil, with his works adorning galleries including Acorn Gallery, Cove Gallery, Haddon Galleries, Trident Gallery, and Gallery 5.

Originally from Manchester, Mike’s journey to becoming a respected artist was far from traditional. Raised in a working-class family, he initially trained as a butcher before transitioning into the field of graphic design. Though self-taught and without formal art training, Mike honed his skills through dedication and experimentation, eventually embracing watercolour as his preferred medium. A friend’s encouragement led him to explore acrylics, which he grew to love for their vibrancy.

Mike described his artistic inspiration as deeply rooted in family and personal memories, often depicting the blend of joy and melancholy found in relationships through his charming characters. He drew influence from the renowned artist LS Lowry, who had a personal connection to his grandfather. Mike’s creative process involved extensive sketching and reflection, often sparked during drives across the countryside that surrounded his Somerset home.

His family remembers him as an inspiring and loving presence. His son reflected, “My dad saw the world in colourful, quirky ways, always finding beauty in the ordinary. He touched many hearts and leaves behind a remarkable legacy.” Mike’s wife called him her “soul mate” and praised his kindness and loyalty. His daughter regarded him as both “a personal inspiration” and her “very best friend,” while his grandchildren fondly recall learning watercolour painting from him and admired him as “the perfect role model.”

In his final days, Mike shared visions of peace and heaven, offering comfort to those closest to him. His artistic spirit and warm personality continue to resonate with friends, collectors, and art lovers throughout Somerset and beyond.

Mike Jackson leaves behind a loving family, devoted friends, and a lasting impact on the regional art scene.
