The family of Cheryl Decarteret, 79, have paid heartfelt tributes following her tragic death after being struck by a van alongside her best friend in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Last Saturday, Cheryl and her lifelong friend were hit by a white transit van on Lowbourne. Cheryl sadly passed away, while her friend, also in her seventies, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Wiltshire Police arrested a 25-year-old local man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs. He has been released on bail pending further investigation.

Cheryl’s family described her as a much-loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was deeply cherished by many. Born in Bradford on Avon and raised in Holt before settling in Melksham, Cheryl started her career at Avon Rubber at 18, where she worked alongside her best friend Margaret Shaw, whose condition remains critical.
Known for her love of gardening, Cheryl had recently retired and was eager to spend more time tending her plants. She was also an active and generous member of her community, often helping friends with shopping, appointments, and laundry.
Survived by a son, two daughters, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, Cheryl treasured family time and often enjoyed holidays with loved ones. Her family expressed their profound loss, saying, “She has left a massive hole in our close family. We will love and miss her forever.”
