The passing of Pauline Sturgess, a dedicated Liberal Democrat activist from Somerset, at the age of 95 has sparked an outpouring of tributes. She was celebrated by volunteers, friends, and family across two constituencies, with the gathering including one sitting MP and two former MPs at Sheppys, Bradford on Tone.
A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats noted, “Pauline Sturgess was a committed and industrious activist who witnessed numerous transformations in local politics. She was a strong advocate for the significance of women in politics and played a pivotal role when Taunton’s first female Member of Parliament, Jackie Ballard, was elected in 1997.”
The spokesperson continued, “Later, she actively supported Jeremy Browne’s campaign to become MP for Taunton Deane in 2005. As the President of the local party from 2018 to 2023, she took great pleasure in Gideon Amos’s entry into Westminster as MP for Taunton and Wellington in July last year.”
