Tree-mendous Day Out Lifts Spirits of Somerset Care Home Residents

Residents of Catherine House Care Home in Frome experienced a heartwarming day immersed in nature during a visit to Westonbirt Arboretum, one of Britain’s premier tree collections. The outing offered a refreshing change of scenery, allowing residents to reconnect with the outdoors and engage their senses in a meaningful way.

Accompanied by family members and guided by a Westonbirt volunteer, the group embarked on an accessible trail designed to showcase the arboretum’s diverse flora. Residents Monica and Sheila enthusiastically explored the interactive walk, eagerly handling bark and leaf samples while asking thoughtful questions. This tactile experience was especially rewarding for those living with dementia, fostering connection and stimulation through touch and scent.

“She was still talking about it the next morning,” shared Sharon, Catherine House’s activity coordinator, highlighting how Sheila proudly displayed her collected samples at home, eager to share the experience with her daughter.
