Transforming Derelict Textile Mill into New Homes

A historic and long-abandoned textile mill in Somerset’s Crewkerne could soon be given a new lease on life as developers seek to transform it into a residential community. Viney Bridge Mill, which has sat empty for nearly two decades, was recently sold at auction, signaling a potential end to its neglect.

The new owners, Viney Bridge Mills Heritage Limited, have put forward ambitious plans to repurpose the existing mill buildings into 30 dwellings and partially demolish others to make way for 16 new homes. Beyond housing, the proposed redevelopment includes provisions for car parking, landscaping, public open space, and infrastructure improvements, including a new access bridge.

Working in collaboration with planning consultancy Luken Beck, the developers aim to create 46 energy-efficient homes while preserving the historic character of the former mill. The plans outline a blend of conversions and new constructions, with a focus on sustainability and varied housing options.

A key feature of the proposal is the conversion of the Mill Street area into a pedestrian-only space, incorporating existing structures and introducing new elements to enhance the overall streetscape. Additional residential units are planned for different sections of the site, with a commitment to retaining the iconic Mill Chimney as a defining feature of the development.

The project also emphasizes eco-friendly practices, with designated EV charging points for each dwelling and purpose-built cycle storage. Furthermore, the landscaping plans incorporate green spaces, trees, and pollinator plants, contributing to the site’s environmental sustainability.

The scheme aims to address local housing needs while respecting the heritage of Viney Bridge Mills, acknowledging the existing poor condition of the buildings while leveraging salvageable materials for the new homes. With this ambitious endeavor, Viney Bridge Mills Heritage Limited endeavors to bring vitality back to the area and provide a meaningful contribution to Somerset’s housing landscape.

The planning application is currently open for feedback on Somerset Council’s planning portal under the reference 23/03063/LBC, inviting public engagement in shaping the future of this historic site.
