Transforming Bridgwater’s Active Travel Network: Meet the Cycling Group Leading the Change

Bridgwater’s cycling campaign group, known as the Bridgwater Area Cycling Campaign (BACC), is on a mission to recruit new members and continue advocating for enhancements in the town’s active travel network. Over the years, the group has played a crucial role in the implementation of various walking and cycling improvements, contributing technical expertise and practical insight to maximize funding from government grants and other sources. With upcoming projects set to further develop the town’s active travel infrastructure, BACC is keen on expanding its membership to ensure ongoing progress in promoting car-free travel within Bridgwater.

Colin Gummer, the communications manager for BACC, emphasized the group’s significant achievements in the past five years and its influential involvement in multiple notable schemes. This includes the delivery of a north-south cycle path, upgrades around the Dunball roundabout, and contributions to the design of the Celebration Mile, funded by the government’s Bridgwater town deal. Additionally, BACC has actively engaged in campaigns to elevate the status of cycling for both recreational and business purposes, organizing family-friendly bike rides and advocating for reduced speed limits on key roads.

As Bridgwater prepares for future developments, BACC seeks to address any deficiencies in the town’s active travel network and invites new members to join its cause. The aim is to build on the progress achieved so far and influence forthcoming enhancements in walking and cycling infrastructure. With the council facing budgetary constraints, the support and participation of voluntary organizations, like BACC, become essential in driving further improvements in active travel provisions.

Mr. Gummer encourages individuals to identify areas in Bridgwater’s active travel network that require attention, emphasizing the wealth of experience and knowledge that BACC offers to support and guide prospective members. Drawing inspiration from successful grassroots movements, such as the ‘Stop de Kindermoord’ movement in the Netherlands, he highlights the importance of constructive engagement to promote the benefits of cycling and walking.
