Tragic Minehead School Bus Crash Claims Life of 10-Year-Old Boy

The town of Minehead is mourning after a devastating school trip ended in tragedy on Thursday, July 17. A bus carrying children from Minehead Middle School flipped and slid down a 20-foot embankment near Cutcombe Hill, resulting in the death of a 10-year-old boy and serious injuries to several others.

The coach, carrying between 60 and 70 passengers, was returning from Exmoor Zoo when the accident occurred on the A396 at approximately 3:15 p.m. An off-duty firefighter who witnessed the crash immediately rushed to assist, helping to extract passengers from the wreckage until emergency crews arrived. While most passengers escaped with minor injuries, some were trapped and rescued by fire services.

Two children were airlifted to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, while four others and three adults remained hospitalized in Somerset. The driver of the coach is reported to be stable but injured. Recovery and investigation efforts at the crash site are ongoing, with the road expected to remain closed for some time.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the tragic passing and are offering support to the family with specially trained officers. Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington expressed gratitude to the Exmoor Search and Rescue volunteers and local community members who provided aid and a rest center during the emergency.

The community’s grief has been palpable as residents, students, and staff gather to pay respects outside Minehead Middle School, leaving floral tributes and heartfelt messages. School leaders and local authorities have been providing ongoing support to the affected families and students.

Headteacher Laura Mackie described the loss as “unimaginable” and praised the strength and bravery of the students and staff. Local officials, including MP Rachel Gilmour, have expressed their deep sorrow and are working to support the community through this difficult time.

The bus company, Ridlers Coaches, has issued a statement expressing devastation and confirmed the driver remains in stable condition. They have paused school transport services in Minehead temporarily while coordinating with Somerset Council on next steps.

Exmoor Zoo also offered condolences, describing the incident as “cruel” and extending thoughts to everyone affected.

The investigation continues, and authorities urge anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant footage to come forward by contacting the police. They also ask the public to refrain from speculation on social media to respect the privacy and wellbeing of those involved.
