Traffic Signal Upgrades to Cause Delays in Taunton

Motorists in Taunton will face delays over the coming months as the town’s key traffic signals are set to undergo upgrades. The Somerset Council’s bus service improvement plan is driving the changes in a bid to improve bus services and increase passenger numbers.

The council initiated the upgrade of two crucial junctions on the A38 Hurdle Way back in November 2024, aimed at reducing waiting times for buses. With the completion of this project, attention will now shift to similar upgrades along the A38 East Reach, with the intention to reduce journey times for buses traveling into the town center.

The phased upgrades will commence on Monday (March 24) and continue over three overlapping sections until April 16. The installation of new technology on existing lights will enable them to synchronize with oncoming buses, allowing for faster passage where safe to do so.

Lane closures will be in effect between 6pm and 11pm daily, with temporary traffic lights in place, while work is executed. The final phase of the upgrade will see the installation of new signals at three identified locations in June and July. These upgrades form part of the council’s ongoing program to modernize traffic signals and associated infrastructure, which are nearing the end of their operational life.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and digital, emphasized the significance of these upgrades in improving bus journey times. The eventual aim is to prioritize buses in navigating the town, thereby promoting sustainable travel options.

Funded through a grant from the Department for Transport, the traffic signal and related infrastructure improvements are part of the council’s commitment to enhancing the town’s bus network, along with the introduction of new electric buses in April. Furthermore, changes in the operation hours of the park and ride site have been approved, extending services to the town center and hospital till late in the evenings.
