A key road in Chard’s Old Town will be closed for two months as vital gas pipe upgrades take place. Starting August 13, the project begins with the installation of multi-way traffic signals at the junction with Mill Lane. From August 20, Old Town road will be fully closed, with no exit available from Bradfield Way, to allow for safe, uninterrupted work.
This eight-week initiative follows recent upgrades on Furnham Road, which are set to conclude by August 12. Wales & West Utilities is managing the project, aiming to complete the essential works by October 6.
Roxanne Whittaker, project manager at Wales & West Utilities, explained the importance of the work: “We understand the inconvenience, but these upgrades are crucial to maintaining a safe and reliable gas supply to homes and businesses in the area. Our network operates mostly underground but is critical for daily needs—whether heating, cooking, or hot water.”

She added, “Besides ensuring current reliability, these upgrades prepare the gas network to safely transport hydrogen and biomethane, supporting a greener energy future.”
