Tower Block Demolition to Pave Way for New Affordable Housing in Weston-super-Mare

Hillsborough House, a tower block constructed in 1965 as social housing in Weston-super-Mare’s Bournville estate, is scheduled for demolition this spring. Owned by Alliance Homes, the building no longer meets modern structural standards and has received planning permission for demolition.

Alliance Homes plans to replace Hillsborough House with a new development offering 100% affordable housing. This project also includes the long-vacant site of the former Bournville Infant School on Selworthy Road. The housing association intends to build 36 new homes ranging from one to four bedrooms, providing much-needed affordable living spaces in the community.

The planning application submitted to North Somerset Council highlights the development’s commitment to quality living environments. Each home will have private amenity spaces—houses will feature rear gardens, while maisonettes will benefit from balconies and shared garden areas. Additionally, around half of the site will be retained as publicly accessible amenity space, including a fenced off-leash area for dogs.

The decision to demolish Hillsborough House and its sister building, Alexandra House on Lonsdale Avenue, follows structural surveys required under post-Grenfell building safety legislation. The surveys indicated that while the buildings are not immediately dangerous, there is a potential long-term risk in the event of major incidents such as explosions or impacts.

Both towers previously served residents over the age of 55. Residents were informed of the demolition plans in July 2025, with Alliance Homes working closely to rehouse them within its other properties to ensure a smooth transition.

The new development promises to be an exemplar project for delivering 100% affordable housing within the Bournville estate, revitalizing the area while maintaining community-focused amenities.
