Torched Derelict Building in Sherborne Sparks Calls for Urgent Action

A deliberate fire has severely damaged a derelict building in Sherborne, drawing urgent calls for remedial action from local authorities. The fire broke out at the former Newell House School on Cornhill, near the A30, at 5:58 pm on Sunday, April 26. The blaze caused the roof to collapse and inflicted significant damage to this Grade II listed structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Sherborne Town Council has urged Dorset Council to take immediate and decisive measures, including enforcement actions or possibly compulsory purchase of the property. The building, which is privately owned, has become a persistent hotspot for anti-social behaviour and vandalism in recent years and is considered a critical public safety concern.

A Sherborne Town Council spokesperson expressed deep regret over the incident, emphasizing the building’s historical value and its decline into disrepair. “This site has long been associated with persistent anti-social behaviour, posing risks to our community. We are working closely with statutory partners to prioritize public safety and mitigate any ongoing threat,” they said.

In response to the fire, Dorset Police launched a formal investigation, treating the incident as suspicious. Around 35 firefighters attended the scene to extinguish the blaze, which was declared under control by 10:10 am the following day. The A30 was temporarily closed during firefighting efforts, and Cornhill remains closed until the site is deemed safe.

Dorset Council has issued a Temporary Road Closure Notice, effective until May 17, to secure the area. The council is actively managing local traffic and will provide updates on road closures, diversions, and access. Community members are encouraged to cooperate and stay informed as the situation develops.

Sherborne Town Council continues to liaise with Dorset Council, Dorset Police, and other agencies to ensure swift action is taken. The public’s assistance is sought, and anyone with relevant information about the fire is urged to come forward to aid the investigation.
