Tom Lammonby secured his first Rothesay County Championship century of the season as Somerset mounted a determined fightback on the second day of their Division One clash with Surrey at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.
However, Somerset’s slim hopes of securing the County Championship took a significant hit as Warwickshire gained the upper hand against Leicestershire. Warwickshire’s acquisition of three batting bonus points has brought them closer to the title, with only a draw needed to be crowned champions. Leicestershire remain 192 runs behind in their second innings, with three wickets down, making a comeback appear unlikely.
Even in the unlikely event of a Leicestershire victory, Somerset would still need to secure a win themselves to keep their championship aspirations alive – a formidable challenge.

On the field, Surrey extended their first innings from an overnight 327 for four to 422 all out. Dan Lawrence was finally dismissed for an impressive 139, while Jack Leach claimed four wickets for 91 runs. Sam Thomas remained not out on 35.
Somerset responded by reaching 222 for three at stumps. They faced a Surrey attack missing key spinners Rahul Chahar, sidelined by a back injury, and Dan Lawrence, who was called away to join the England squad for the crucial third ODI against Sri Lanka.
Leading Somerset’s resurgence, Lammonby was unbeaten on 103 off 217 balls, finally reaching three figures after six half-centuries earlier this season. Captain Tom Abell was also unbeaten on 63, becoming only the third player to surpass 1,000 runs in the Championship First Division this season.
Batting conditions were excellent at the start of the day, allowing Lawrence to continue his aggressive innings, including a six that delighted the home crowd. Surrey lost wickets steadily, with Ben Foakes and Mahipal Lomror among those dismissed.
Lawrence’s effortless stroke play concluded with a superb 139, falling to a diving catch by Somerset wicketkeeper James Rew. Surrey’s innings ended with contributions from several players, including a strong performance from Leach.
Somerset’s second innings started cautiously but saw early wickets fall to Lawrence. However, Lammonby and Abell steadied the innings with a valuable century partnership. Lammonby reached his century to warm applause from the crowd, providing a beacon of hope for Somerset.
Reflecting on his innings, Lammonby said: “Having got so close to a hundred more than once this season, there were a few voices sounding in my head when I got into the nineties. It’s a very good pitch, but even so there was definitely a feeling of relief when I got the single to move to a century.
“We would certainly have taken the position we are in at the start of the day. Now we have to build as big a total as possible tomorrow and hopefully put some pressure on Surrey with our spinners.
“It was important that Tom Abell and I were still together at the close. No praise is high enough for Tom, who seems to churn out 1,000 runs every season, even when not in top form.
“The work he puts in every day is an example to everyone. This summer with places in the England team up for grabs, I certainly think he would have been an option. He is so consistent year-in, year-out.”
