Tom Abell, a key player for Somerset, is preparing for another season, and his goal is to build on his outstanding form in 2024. Despite facing an injury setback at the beginning of the previous season, he garnered 657 runs, including three centuries and achieved a personal best of 152 not out, showcasing an average of over 50 in the County Championship.
In an open interview, the 31-year-old reflected on the past year and articulated his ambitions for the upcoming season, speaking exclusively to SomersetCCC’s website.
“I was disappointed to be sidelined due to injury at the start of last year as I felt ready to perform,” he lamented. “However, I was fortunate to be part of the team as we contended for the Championship title. Although we didn’t clinch it, we are determined to strive for a similar position this season by September.

“The County Championship holds significant importance for us, and excelling in this competition is a top priority. Last year marked a phenomenal performance in red ball cricket for us, reigniting our determination to maintain our position at the top.
“We relished the intensity of our matches and emerged victorious against tough opponents, and that’s where we aim to be. I am confident that we can replicate that success by the end of this season.”
Following his decision to step down as captain post the 2023 season, Abell embraced a fresh perspective, a topic he also delved into.
“Captaincy demands a completely different mindset,” he elucidated to the SomersetCCC website. “You have to consider the entire team and every individual within every decision you make. There are numerous aspects to ponder. Now, as a player, I’m pleased to be back within the team, focusing more on my individual game.
“While there are elements of captaincy that I miss, I am glad to have more concentration on myself and my game. My objective has always been to lead from the front with the bat, and now I have the opportunity to work on refining my game.”
When asked if he still harbors ambitions to play for England, he replied, “Absolutely. That aspiration will never wane. Circumstances are always changing, but my desire remains unwavering. I strive to perform well, that’s my primary focus. I hope it paves the way for the next stage, but all I can influence is my approach and my performance for Somerset.”
