Tom Abell became the eighth Somerset player to score a first-class triple century as the County Championship Division One match against Surrey at the Cooper Associates Ground concluded in a draw.
Somerset extended their overnight first innings total from 691 for eight to 731 all out, marking the second highest total in the county’s history. Abell, the last wicket to fall, finished unbeaten on 307 runs off 407 balls. His innings, lasting over nine hours, included 31 fours and eight sixes. Lower-order batsman Migael Pretorius supported Abell admirably with 84 runs, contributing to a record ninth-wicket partnership of 195, a new Somerset ninth-wicket record.
Surrey’s second innings was disrupted twice by rain, leaving them at 127 for five at stumps. Ben Foakes top-scored with 27 not out. Surrey took 12 points from the match while Somerset secured 13.

Choosing to bat on at the start of the day, Somerset allowed Abell the opportunity to convert his overnight 284 not out into a landmark triple century. Abell reached 300 with a single to third man off Dan Worrall, after facing 402 balls, becoming one of the select group of Somerset players to achieve this feat, joining the likes of Harold Gimblett and Sir Vivian Richards.
The innings saw Somerset surpass their previous second highest total of 705 for nine, achieved against Hampshire at Taunton in 2003. The partnership between Abell and Pretorius, initially worth 159 at the close of play the previous day, broke records as it passed 183.
Abell’s innings ended just shy of becoming the top run-scorer in this season’s Championship First Division when he was caught at long-on off Reece Topley, finishing with 1,287 runs-only one behind Nottinghamshire’s Joe Clarke.
Following their large first innings lead of 309 runs, Somerset took early wickets in Surrey’s reply. Abell, fielding at second slip, caught Dom Sibley, and bowled Ryan Patel. Surrey’s Ollie Pope was dismissed caught behind off Archie Vaughan just before lunch.
Spin bowling featured after the lunch interval, with Vaughan and Jack Leach operating from each end under floodlights. Vaughan claimed key wickets including that of Rory Burns and Nik Gorantla after multiple rain interruptions.
Despite the weather challenges, Foakes and Mahipal Lomror steadied Surrey’s innings to ensure the match concluded as a draw.
Reflecting on his achievement, Abell expressed humility about joining the ranks of Somerset’s greats and spoke of his pride in the innings. “Records are not something I play for, but I am sure I’ll look back one day with enormous pride on this game. It means a great deal to me,” he said.
Abell acknowledged his close challenge to be the division’s top run-scorer, explaining he played an ambitious shot to try and force a result for his team.
Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory praised the team’s consistent performances throughout the summer. “I don’t think there is a reason why we can’t get over the line other than it is a bloody difficult competition to win,” he stated. Gregory highlighted the team’s strong squad depth and expressed optimism for the future, crediting the supporters and praising Taunton as a wonderful cricket venue.
Somerset have now finished runners-up in the County Championship seven times this century, yet a title win still eludes them. However, with the performances shown this season, their prospects remain promising.
