Toby Samuel’s impressive maiden appearance at the French Open concluded with a first-round loss to eighth seed Alex De Minaur. The Bath-based player earned his spot in the main draw by advancing through qualifying rounds on his first attempt at Roland Garros. However, the challenge intensified as Samuel, 23, faced his first-ever top-100 opponent.
In hot and demanding conditions, Samuel showed resilience and determination in his Grand Slam debut but was ultimately outclassed by De Minaur, who secured a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Samuel’s rise has been remarkable. Last year, he posted the largest ranking leap among male players, climbing from 1,867th in the world to 266th. His momentum continued this season, reaching a career-high ranking of 159 upon arrival in Paris, positioning him as the British number eight.

Growing up in Dorset and currently training at the University of Bath, Samuel has followed a path similar to other British players, developing his skills through US college tennis. While initially appearing nervous against the experienced Australian, Samuel quickly found his rhythm. He even held a 2-0 lead in the second set after breaking De Minaur’s serve, showing his potential to challenge top-tier opponents.
Nevertheless, De Minaur regained control, breaking back to neutralize Samuel’s advantage. Frustration surfaced for the Bath player as he bounced his racket on the clay, and De Minaur closed out the match confidently with five consecutive games.
Despite the loss, Samuel’s debut on one of tennis’s biggest stages marks an important step in his career, hinting at a promising future as he continues his ascent in the sport.
