Toby Samuel’s breakthrough at the French Open came to an end with a straight-sets defeat to eighth seed Alex De Minaur in the first round. The Bath-based 23-year-old had successfully navigated the qualifying rounds in his debut appearance at Roland Garros, marking a significant milestone in his young career.
Facing a formidable opponent ranked within the top ten, Samuel encountered a vastly different level of competition. Despite the challenging conditions and the pressure of the Grand Slam stage, Samuel demonstrated composure and moments of promise against the experienced Australian. However, De Minaur’s superior class showed through in a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Samuel’s rise has been remarkable; after climbing from 1,867 in the world rankings to 266 last year— the largest leap by any male player—he has continued to improve. Arriving in Paris at a career-high ranking of 159, Samuel holds the position of Britain’s eighth-ranked male player.

Growing up in Dorset and now training at the University of Bath, Samuel showed initial nerves against De Minaur, conceding an early break. Yet he fought back admirably, taking a brief lead early in the second set after breaking serve. Unfortunately, De Minaur regained control, responding with a decisive five-game streak to close out the match.
Though the result was not in his favor, Samuel’s performance at Roland Garros signifies a promising start to his Grand Slam journey and highlights his upward trajectory in professional tennis.
