Toby Samuel’s Wimbledon debut was filled with promise and intense drama as he narrowly fell to French Open semi-finalist Jakub Mensik in a gripping five-set thriller. The 23-year-old British wild card, fresh from his first ATP Tour win and a semi-final run in Eastbourne, showcased remarkable resilience on Court Three.
Samuel, who trains in Bath, seemed poised for a major upset, taking a break and leading 3-1 in the final set. However, Mensik fought back, winning the next four games and pushing the match to a decisive 10-point tiebreak.
After three hours and 33 minutes of relentless tennis, Mensik secured victory with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7) scoreline. The 20-year-old Czech praised Samuel’s performance on court, saying, “It’s been a tough one. Toby played unbelievable tennis and didn’t give me any free points. I’m super happy to keep the momentum and advance to the second round.”
