Thrillseekers Ride Somerset Floods with Kitesurfing Adventure

In an extraordinary display of adventure and creativity, thrill-seekers in Somerset have turned the aftermath of Storm Chandra into an unexpected kitesurfing haven. Following intense winds and heavy rainfall last week, the village of Godney found itself submerged, transforming the landscape into a vast expanse of water.

Watersports enthusiasts seized this rare opportunity on the Somerset Levels, which received over 50mm of rain on Thursday, January 29th. Stunning drone footage showcases Dave Cavell, 47, and Craig Nicholls, 60, expertly kitesurfing through the floodwaters, capturing the thrill and uniqueness of the experience.

Dave, an associate director from Wells and father of two, had long admired the flat waters of the Levels during his daily school runs. This year, determined to turn his dream into reality, he took to social media. Retired physicist and teacher Craig, along with drone photographer Alex Rosevear, 33, reached out to join the adventure.

After securing permission from the landowner, who is associated with the Glastonbury Wedding and Events Venue, the trio set out on their watery expedition. Dave remarked on the surprising depth of the floodwaters, which reached up to four feet in places, offering “the flattest water I’ve ever kitesurfed on.”

Despite challenging conditions, including a lack of wind, the group relished the experience. The perfect alignment of wind, tides, and drone filming made the day unforgettable. What began as a chance meeting turned into a lasting friendship, with plans for future kitesurfing escapades already underway.

Dave reflected, “We were all complete strangers at the beginning of the week, but we made it a reality and it all worked out.” The team has been welcomed back by the landowners and looks forward to capturing more of their aquatic adventures on camera.
