Thomas Rew: England’s Rising Star Eyes Bright Future Amid Exams and Family Rivalry

For many teenagers, the pressure of summer exams is the ultimate challenge. For Thomas Rew, England’s promising young wicketkeeper-batter, it’s just one part of a remarkable journey that has seen him emerge as one of the nation’s most exciting cricket talents.

The past 12 months have been transformative for Rew. From the tough pitches of Australia during the England Lions tour to leading the England Under-19 team to the World Cup final, his growth has been rapid and rewarding—even if the ultimate prize narrowly eluded them.

Reflecting on his whirlwind winter, Rew shared with Somerset CCC, “The opportunities I’ve had have been incredible. Traveling to Australia and then captaining in the World Cup were unbelievable experiences. The final didn’t go our way, but the journey was invaluable.”

Rew’s performance on the international stage caught eyes everywhere, especially with a commanding century in the semi-final against Australia that firmly stamped his potential.

“Scoring a hundred at the World Cup was a special moment. I’m proud of how I played and grateful for the support from everyone in our squad,” he added.

Despite international adventures, Rew’s loyalty lies firmly with Somerset. Having debuted last year and already experienced the thrill of packed crowds at Taunton during the Vitality Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup, he eagerly anticipates more of those electric moments this summer.

“Walking out in front of a full house at Taunton was unforgettable. I loved every second of it and hope to enjoy the same atmosphere again,” Thomas recalled fondly.

Currently, role models and revision notes compete for his focus. But once exams are behind him, Rew’s sights are firmly set on the 2026 cricket season.

“After exams, I’ll be able to dedicate myself fully to cricket. My goal is to make the first team across all formats, contribute meaningfully, and help secure wins for Somerset,” he said.

Adding intrigue to the upcoming season is the dynamic sibling rivalry for the wicketkeeper spot, with Thomas’s older brother James already established in Somerset’s lineup.

Asked whether he would keep wicket, Thomas smiled and quipped, “That’s a great question and not really mine to answer! But James and I are very competitive, so if it comes down to it, who knows?”

With talent, determination, and a hint of family rivalry, Thomas Rew’s journey is one that Somerset supporters will be watching closely in the seasons to come.
