Thomas Rew: England’s Rising Cricket Star Eyes Exams and Sibling Rivalry

For many teenagers, upcoming summer exams are a source of major stress. For Thomas Rew, however, this academic pressure coexists with the excitement and challenge of emerging as one of England’s most promising young cricketers.

Over the past year, Rew’s cricket journey has taken him from the competitive pitches of Australia with the England Lions, to captaining England in the Under-19 World Cup final against India, and establishing himself as a key player for Somerset. His experience has been invaluable for his growth both on and off the field.

Reflecting on his memorable winter, Rew shared with Somerset CCC, “The opportunities I’ve had have been incredible. Touring Australia and then leading the side in the World Cup was a huge privilege. The final didn’t go our way, but the journey was phenomenal.”

A highlight of the World Cup was Rew’s standout century in the semi-final against Australia, a performance that firmly positioned him on the international stage. “Scoring a hundred at the World Cup was a special moment for me. I’m proud of how the whole team contributed throughout the tournament.”

Despite his international exploits, Rew’s loyalty firmly lies with Somerset. Having debuted last season and experienced the electrifying atmosphere of packed crowds at Taunton during the Vitality Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup, he’s eager for more of that electric support this summer.

“Walking out to a packed Taunton crowd was unforgettable. I’ve treasured those moments and hope to enjoy them many more times this season,” he said.

While his immediate focus is on completing his exams, Rew’s eyes are set firmly on the 2026 season. “After exams, I can give my full attention to cricket. My goal is to break into the first team across all formats and contribute to the team’s success.”

An intriguing subplot to watch this season is the competition for wicketkeeper duties at Somerset. Thomas’s brother, James Rew, is already an established presence in the side, setting the stage for a compelling sibling rivalry.

Answering whether he will assume wicketkeeping responsibilities, Thomas offered a playful yet diplomatic reply: “That’s a great question, but not one I can answer yet! James and I are both very competitive, so if it comes down to that, who knows what might happen?”
