The Wurzels Cut Gig Short After Heat-Related Illness

The Wurzels had to cut their performance short at the Party in the Palace event in Wells, Somerset, after band members Pete Budd and Tommy Banner experienced heat-related health issues. On July 12, with temperatures soaring above 31°C, both 85-year-old musicians fell ill while performing under direct sunlight on an unshaded stage.

Pete Budd had to leave the stage early due to sun and heat exhaustion, while Tommy Banner suffered sunstroke and dizziness, prompting him to step away as well. The intense heat and lack of airflow on stage contributed to their conditions.

Following the incident, the band assured fans via Facebook that they have “fully recovered from sun and heat exhaustion.” They expressed gratitude toward the security and medical staff at the event, praising their swift and attentive care. Tommy specifically thanked the security team for escorting him to a cool room and a nurse named Laura for helping to bring his temperature back to normal.

In an interview with the BBC, Tommy recounted, “I was about to announce the last song and Pete wasn’t beside me where he normally is. He was in a bad way.” Now rested and refreshed, The Wurzels are ready to continue their touring schedule.
