The Welly: Bath’s New Pub Celebrating Local Produce and Craft Brewing

Bath is set to welcome a fresh addition to its vibrant pub scene with the opening of The Welly on Green Street. Launching on Friday, October 17, this new venue promises to deliver an authentic farm-to-glass and farm-to-fork experience by sourcing all its ingredients from a sustainable farm located just outside the city.

The Welly revives a site that has been without a pub since 2003, previously home to Belushi’s and the Oliver Inn. Spearheaded by the team behind Somer Valley Farms and Somer Valley Brewing, The Welly aims to reconnect patrons with the origins of their food and drink.

Chester Ellis, Head Brewer at Somer Valley Brewing, shares, “The Welly has been brewing for a long time now—no pun intended! Our taproom will highlight beers made with malted barley and pure water from our farm in Peasedown St John, paired perfectly with seasonal small plates.”

The pub’s menu, curated by Head Chef Peter Lewis—known for his work at Henry’s Restaurant in Bath and the Bunch of Grapes in Bradford-on-Avon—features craft beer and dishes crafted entirely from local produce. This commitment ensures minimal transportation, maximum freshness, and authentic provenance.

Somer Valley Farms underscores their sustainable approach, stating, “Virtually everything in our beers started life on Somer Valley Farms. This means minimum beer miles and maximum provenance – something very few breweries can claim.”

The Welly’s arrival is timely as the UK pub industry faces challenges, with closures occurring at a rate of eight pubs per week over the past two decades. This new venture not only offers Bath residents a welcoming new social hub but also supports local agriculture and sustainable brewing.
