The Royal Oak: A Pub Revival Story

The Royal Oak, a historic pub in Bath, has defied the odds by not only surviving but thriving in the modern age. Once on the brink of demolition, the pub has now been crowned the overall Branch Pub of the Year for 2025 by the Bath & Borders branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). Known for its impressive selection of real ales, including those brewed on-site in Ralph’s Ruin brewery, the pub has been a mainstay in the Good Beer Guide since 2007 and has received numerous accolades over the years.

In addition to its renowned brews, the Royal Oak prides itself on fostering authentic pub culture, with no WiFi to encourage patrons to engage in conversation. The establishment also hosts tap takeovers, showcasing a diverse range of beers from both local and distant microbreweries.

The recent award has secured the pub a spot in the regional heats of CAMRA’s Pub of the Year competition, with the possibility of advancing to the national finals. This recognition is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Royal Oak, which has transformed from a venue “destined to die” to a flourishing “real beer haven.”

The Royal Oak’s journey is a testament to the enduring allure of traditional pubs and the unwavering commitment of its team to provide a top-tier beer experience.
