The Potential for a Tram Network in Bristol and Bath

The prospect of a modern tram network linking Bath and Bristol is gaining momentum as a key political agenda. The idea, which has been a topic of discussion for years, is now being put forward by leading candidates for the next Metro Mayor of the West of England.

Presently, trams, or a ‘light rail system’, are operational in various cities across the UK, but Bristol had its tram network dismantled after World War II. Despite initial studies into the feasibility of a rapid transit system, previous Metro Mayors did not advance the plans. However, recent indications suggest that this could change.

Heather Mack, a Bristol city councillor and the Green Party’s candidate for the upcoming Metro Mayor election, voiced her support for the proposal following a presentation by Dr. David Walmsley, an expert on tram networks. Former Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees had suggested that any transit system would need to include underground sections near the city center to minimize traffic congestion.

The issue of implementing a mass transit system is expected to be a significant focus in the next Metro Mayor election in May 2025. Cllr Mack highlighted the potential of bringing trams to both cities and emphasized the need to ensure demand supports such an initiative. Cllr Edwards, the Green group leader, echoed Mack’s sentiments and emphasized the importance of political will in realizing this vision.

The Labour candidate, Helen Godwin, has also pledged to address the transportation challenges, emphasizing the need for mass transit solutions, improved bus services, and integrated ticketing. The responsibility for transportation in Bristol and Bath falls under the West of England Combined Authority, and the absence of a rapid transit system has hindered efforts to bring the bus network under public control.

The potential tram network has the capacity to transform public transportation in the region, facilitate decarbonization, and enhance accessibility. As the political landscape evolves, the possibility of introducing trams to Bristol and Bath seems more promising than ever.
