The Cake Box: From Passion to Success in Yeovil

Deborah and Robert Gingell, the owners of the Cake Box, have transformed their passion for baking into a flourishing business in Yeovil. Despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple expanded their bakery with the support of dedicated customers and staff.

Robert, reflecting on their journey, shared, “This is our second shop in Yeovil. We have another one on the other side of town at Wessex Road. That came about as I was working for a bakery company not far from here, and redundancies were looming, and I took voluntary redundancy and bought that bakery. That was in August 2019, and then in March 2020, we hit Covid.”

The decision to open a second branch in the town center was initially met with hesitation, but the warm reception from the Quedam staff and customers affirmed their choice. Deborah added, “Since we opened, it’s been good here. Quedam management team have been excellent and supportive, and the security team are fantastic.”

The couple has clear plans for future expansion, aiming to offer a diverse menu of freshly baked goods and meals. Former journalist Deborah expressed her joy in transitioning from her previous career to baking, stating, “We always said that we wanted it to be a bakery with a café, not a bakery… I would make novelty cakes for friends and family. Rob has always been in catering all his life, and I find there are happier customers with cake, though.”

Their commitment to quality and innovation is evident in their plans to include a gluten-free bakery at the new location. James Tovey, Centre Manager at the Quedam Centre, praised the Cake Box: “Having tasted many of their products, I know that this will be one business our customers will love.”
