Baby name trends ebb and flow over time, with many names that were once all the rage now losing their appeal. Choosing a baby’s name is a significant decision—a lasting legacy that parents want to get just right.
While timeless classics like Olivia continue to dominate the charts—Olivia has held a spot in the top three girls' names every year since 2006—other names are quietly falling out of favor.
Prashant, a naming expert from the gifting website Personalisedbee, explains this phenomenon: “Names, much like fashion or home decor, go through cycles. They surge in popularity when they feel fresh and modern, but can quickly fall out of favor as parents seek unique and current alternatives. This is why names like Brody, Mason, and Toby are declining—they were once trendy, but today’s parents are looking for something different.”

Among boys’ names, Brody, Mason, and Toby show the steepest declines. Brody dropped 17 places in just one year, falling from 82nd to 99th according to data from the Express. In 2024, only 553 babies were named Brody, down from 630 in 2023—a significant fall that could see it vanish from the top 100 soon.
Mason also slipped, with 1,118 babies given the name in 2023 compared to just 806 in 2024. Toby followed a similar pattern, dropping from 678 babies in 2023 to 621 in 2024.
On the girls’ side, names like Jessica, Lola, and Scarlett are showing signs of decline. Jessica was given to 573 babies in 2023 but dropped to 483 in 2024, signaling that this once-perennial favorite is waning in popularity. Lola also shrank from 595 babies in 2023 to 543 in 2024, with Scarlett declining slightly from 634 to 610.
These changes highlight how both traditional and trendy names can quickly fall out of style, underscoring the ever-evolving nature of baby name preferences.
