Tesla has submitted plans to establish a new electric vehicle (EV) charging facility adjacent to a McDonald’s restaurant just off the A303 in Somerset. The proposed site, known as Wincanton Gateway, is situated north of the dual carriageway, off the A371 Lawrence Hill. This commercial area currently houses the Wagtail pub, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and a Travelodge.
The application outlines the creation of a charging hub next to McDonald’s, accessible via an existing access road off Long Close. Somerset Council is expected to reach a decision on the proposal before Christmas.
The planned facility will feature 16 Tesla supercharger units sheltered beneath a solar canopy. Additional components include a substation and a battery energy storage unit, designed to store solar-generated power for later use, thereby reducing demand on the local electricity grid.
Enhancements to the current access arrangements are also proposed, including an improved footpath along the western edge of the site. This path will connect to a separate drive-thru development on adjacent land, which received approval in July 2023.
A spokesperson for Planning Potential, representing Tesla, commented: “The supercharging facility will support the government’s broader goals of transitioning to ultra-low and zero-emission vehicles, aligning with local initiatives for decarbonisation and improved air quality. Tesla’s charging network is accessible to all EV users, not exclusively Tesla owners.
“The western section of the site is intended for an independent drive-thru development, featuring its own access and layout. This proposed charging infrastructure aims to make efficient use of available land without compromising the delivery or future operation of this adjacent development, or any alternative uses that may arise.
“The development represents a sustainable and appropriate addition to an established commercial area adjacent to a major transport route. It will provide essential low-carbon transport infrastructure serving both local residents and long-distance travellers along the A303 corridor.”
If granted approval, construction could begin early next year, with the charging hub potentially operational by spring 2027 for the benefit of both local users and visitors.
