Somerset residents are calling for significant improvements in their local NHS services, with top priorities including increased funding for mental health support, easier access to general practitioners, and improved transportation to healthcare facilities. These insights come as the government consults on its ambitious ten-year plan to shape the future of the NHS.
The NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board (ICB), responsible for allocating health resources across the county, conducted extensive public consultation ahead of submitting recommendations to the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC). The feedback captures broad public endorsement of the NHS’s core principles but also highlights ongoing concerns about the accessibility of services, particularly in rural communities, as well as challenges with staffing, funding, and infrastructure.
Jonathan Higman, Chief Executive of the ICB, presented the consultation findings during a meeting in Bridgwater on May 22. The government’s strategic direction for the NHS centers around three key shifts aimed at improving care delivery and outcomes.

Engaging over 750 residents between November 2024 and March 2025, the consultation revealed strong support for maintaining the NHS as a free, universally accessible service staffed by compassionate professionals. However, Higman emphasized that persistent challenges in funding and infrastructure must be addressed to ensure effective reforms.
“There is a clear call for substantial investment in community health infrastructure, increased resources, and seamless coordination across all care services to realize these strategic shifts,” he stated.
The consultation identified ten key NHS priorities as voiced by Somerset residents, focusing on areas such as mental health, access to primary care, and transport services. These priorities will inform the future planning and delivery of healthcare in the region.
To foster further dialogue on the future of NHS services and dental care in Somerset, Taunton and Wellington MP Gideon Amos will host a public meeting on Friday, May 30. The event will take place at the Creative Innovation Centre on Paul Street, starting at 7:30 pm. Residents are encouraged to join and share their views.
