Teenager Killed While Fleeing Police on M5; Driver Found Not at Fault, Family Says

The tragic death of 17-year-old Tamzin Ellen Hall, who was fatally struck by a car on the M5 motorway after fleeing a police vehicle, will be examined in a jury inquest, a coroner has confirmed.

Tamzin, from Wellington, Somerset, suffered fatal injuries when she was hit on the stretch of motorway between junction 25 near Taunton and junction 24 at Bridgwater shortly after 11 pm on November 11, 2024. At that time, she was under arrest and travelling in an Avon and Somerset Police car that had come to a stop on the motorway.

During a pre-inquest review held at Taunton Coroner’s Court, Senior Coroner Samantha Marsh announced the inquest would proceed before a jury. The hearing is provisionally scheduled to begin on January 11, 2027, at Wells Town Hall and is expected to last two to three weeks.

Present at Tuesday’s hearing were members of Tamzin’s family, including her mother, police representatives, and the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision. A spokesperson for the Hall family emphasized that the driver was “not at fault at all” in the incident that led to the teenager’s death.

Court records reveal that Tamzin exited the police vehicle, crossed the motorway, and climbed over a crash barrier before being struck by a car travelling southbound. The collision caused fatal injuries to her head, neck, and chest.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of Tamzin’s death, including the interactions she had with two Avon and Somerset Police officers prior to the incident. An IOPC report detailed how Tamzin managed to remove her handcuffs and move from the rear passenger seat to the front passenger seat of the police car before fleeing.
