Teacher Comes Full Circle Returning as Deputy Head at Former Primary School

Matthew Brinkworth’s journey has come full circle, as he returns to the primary school where he was once a pupil—this time stepping into the role of Deputy Head Teacher. Nearly 30 years after first enrolling at Farmborough Church Primary School, close to Bath, Matthew began his leadership role on Tuesday, September 2.

Matthew studied at the rural Church of England school from 1995 to 2002. Reflecting on his return, he shared: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Farmborough community as Deputy Headteacher and Class Teacher. Having been a student here myself, I know firsthand what a special place Farmborough is, and it’s a real privilege to come back and contribute to that.”

Farmborough Church Primary School, home to 157 pupils, also boasts a unique connection with children’s author Dick King-Smith, famed for The Sheep-Pig, who was once part of the school’s staff.

The school’s recent November 2024 Ofsted report praised its “ambitious curriculum” and highlighted the strong, caring relationships between staff and pupils—qualities Matthew is keen to nurture as part of the leadership team.

Headteacher Darren Roberts expressed his enthusiasm for Matthew’s appointment: “We’re thrilled to welcome Matthew back to Farmborough—this time as Deputy Headteacher. His journey from pupil to leader brings valuable experience and passion to our school community.”

Before returning to Farmborough, Matthew taught at Weston All Saints Primary School in Bath. Both schools are part of The Partnership Trust, a multi-academy trust that supports 17 primary, first, and special schools across Bath and Somerset.

Emily Massey, CEO of The Partnership Trust, added, “Congratulations to Matthew on his new role. It’s wonderful to see talented teachers develop their careers within our Trust. While Matthew will be missed at Weston All Saints, we’re delighted he remains part of our family of schools — it’s ‘au revoir’ not ‘goodbye.’”
