Taunton’s New Civic Square to Open with Community Celebration

Residents of Taunton are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new civic square at the heart of the Orchard Grove development with a community event offering free ice creams for the first 100 attendees.

The Orchard Grove project, situated between A38 Wellington Road in Comeytrowe and Honiton Road in Trull, is a major housing estate delivered by the Orchard Grove Consortium—comprising Taylor Wimpey, Bovis Homes, Linden Homes, and LiveWest. When complete, it will feature 2,000 new homes.

Already completed on the site are a new primary school and a convenient ‘park and bus’ facility. Construction is also underway for commercial spaces and a 68-bed care home near the western entrance of the development.

To mark this milestone, the developers will officially open the civic square, a dedicated public space designed for community gatherings, on Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event promises family-friendly activities, including children’s nature-themed crafts, free seed packet giveaways, giant garden games, and live performances by a local community choir.

In addition to entertainment, refreshments will be available to purchase, and the first 100 attendees will receive complimentary ice creams or hot drinks—a perfect incentive to arrive early and enjoy the festivities.

Development within Orchard Grove continues robustly: construction has begun on 209 new homes surrounding Egremont Road within the estate’s western neighbourhood. Further plans for an additional 117 homes near Higher Comeytrowe Farm Lane are awaiting approval, with decisions anticipated by Christmas from Somerset Council’s planning committee.

Moreover, plans for a new community asset, Hortsbridge Park, are under review. Located north of Egremont Road by the Lipe Hill Lane active travel link, the park is expected to include allotments, an amphitheater, and a substantial children’s play area—further enhancing the lifestyle options for future residents.

This exciting phase in Orchard Grove’s evolution underscores a commitment to creating vibrant, connected community spaces alongside quality housing and amenities.
