Taunton Special School Celebrated for Inclusive Approach and Outstanding SEND Progress

Cambian Somerset School, an independent special school in Taunton, has received high praise from Ofsted inspectors for its welcoming atmosphere, individualized curriculum, and significant progress made by its pupils from their starting points. The school, which serves 40 pupils aged 10 to 18, was rated ‘Good’ once again following a recent Ofsted inspection.

Headteacher David Fielding expressed his pride in the school community, stating, “We are thrilled that Ofsted has acknowledged the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our pupils, and the invaluable support from parents and carers. I’m privileged to work with such a committed team focused on securing the best outcomes for our learners—without this, their life prospects would be very different. We are proud of our achievements and eager to build on this success moving forward.”

Ofsted’s report highlights that pupils begin their day at Cambian Somerset School with enthusiasm. Many students join after challenging experiences elsewhere, but staff take the time to understand their interests and needs. The strong relationships between staff and pupils help students thrive in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

Located at Creech Court in Creech St Michael, Cambian Somerset School exclusively serves children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), all with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans. About 85% of pupils have autism, while others have communication and interaction needs, social emotional and mental health challenges, ADHD, or combinations of these.

Inspectors praised the school’s purposeful learning environment, clear routines, and high expectations. Pupils are taught how to be supportive friends, demonstrating tolerance and understanding that leads to warm friendships and a bullying-free environment.

The curriculum was commended for being broad, ambitious, and tailored to each pupil’s academic and pastoral profile. Starting points and therapeutic needs are carefully assessed to design individual learning pathways that match each student’s requirements.

Teaching quality was also a noted strength. Most staff demonstrate secure subject knowledge, supported by effective professional development programs. Mathematics instruction stood out, with well-chosen vocabulary helping pupils grasp complex concepts such as algebra.

Mr. Fielding also announced plans to expand the school in response to local demand. “We are pleased to be working towards increasing our capacity by an additional 20 places, allowing us to support more young people in the near future.”
