Tom Sloman, the talented golfer from Taunton, has earned a spot in this year’s prestigious Open Championship, held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Southport, starting tomorrow.
At 29 years old, Tom is stepping onto the world stage for the first time in this renowned tournament. His journey began at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club, where he distinguished himself by winning the Junior Championship multiple times before claiming the title of Club Champion.
Tom’s early success continued as he represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 2019 Walker Cup, a significant milestone before turning professional. Since then, he has achieved notable success on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Tour and other circuits, earning him honorary membership at his home club, Taunton and Pickeridge.

Recently, Tom secured a strong finish at the Swiss Challenge, tying for second place with impressive rounds of 71, 63, 67, and 68, taking home nearly €17,000 in prize money.
To qualify for The Open, Tom delivered outstanding performances at two qualifying events. He shot 5 under par at Ferndown Golf Club and an impressive 8 under par over two rounds at Burnham and Berrow. These results came amidst tough competition, including top 50 world players Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri.
Reflecting on his qualification, Tom said, “The Open is the biggest tournament in the world and everyone wants to play in it. It probably won’t sink in that I have qualified until I get there.”
Tom will tee off for his first two rounds alongside New Zealander and fellow regional qualifier Kazuma Kobori and Irish amateur David Howard, beginning Thursday at 10:42 am.
