Tanker Overturns on A39 in Cornwall, Driver Trapped as Emergency Services Respond

A tanker lorry overturned during a crash on the A39 in Cornwall, causing significant disruption and trapping the driver inside the vehicle. The accident took place near the Carnon Gate roundabout, close to Devoran, resulting in the southbound carriageway being closed.

Emergency responders, including police, ambulance, and fire crews, quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Images from the location show the navy blue tanker lying on its side, blocking one of the roundabout exits. Authorities have rerouted traffic to alleviate congestion caused by the closure.

Eyewitnesses reported extensive delays, with one describing a tanker on its side near Perranarworthal and noting temporary road closures and traffic queues. Another witness said they were stuck in traffic for around 40 minutes due to the roundabout being completely blocked.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the incident involved three vehicles and police were notified around 9:45 a.m. The road remains closed at the top of the Carnon Downs carriageway while emergency services work to clear the scene. Due to the tanker’s involvement, a specialist recovery operation is required.

One driver has been rescued from the wreckage. While injuries have not been officially confirmed, they are not believed to be life-threatening at this time. Google Maps shows heavy delays in the area, with tailbacks extending in both directions along the A39 and towards Bissoe.

Authorities are continuing to manage the incident and advise motorists to avoid the area if possible.
