Take a Virtual Tour: Somerset Dairy Farmer Showcases His Favourite Livestock

To celebrate Cow Appreciation Day, dairy farmer Mike Jones, Dairy Technical Manager at the UK Agri-Tech Centre, has opened the gates of the South West Dairy Development Centre at Shepton Mallet for a special virtual tour. Mike took the opportunity to introduce viewers to some of his favourite dairy cows and highlight life on the farm.

Mike manages a herd of 200 cows at the centre’s partner farm, Steanbow Farms. He shared insight into the daily routines of the herd, which benefits from advanced care and innovative farming practices. “Our cows follow their natural rhythms—they decide when to eat, drink, rest, and visit one of the three milking robots for a treat of cow cake and milking,” Mike explained.

The herd is thriving, achieving an impressive average lactation yield of 11,300 litres over 305 days, with milk fat and protein levels at 4.2% and 3.3%, respectively. After each lactation cycle, the cows enjoy a six-week rest before their next calving. The environment fosters calmness and cleanliness and supports excellent fertility, boasting a pregnancy rate of 35%, significantly above the national average.
