Thousands of people across the UK eagerly watched the solar eclipse on Wednesday. However, eye health professionals are warning the public about the serious risks of viewing such events without proper eye protection. Nkosi Yearwood, an optometrist and council member for Wales at The College of Optometrists, emphasises that the sun emits more than just visible light; ultraviolet and infrared rays also pose significant dangers to eye health.
Despite the sun being partially obscured during an eclipse, the remaining visible portion still emits intense energy. Yearwood points out that even at 90% coverage, the 10% of the sun that remains visible carries sufficient energy to harm the eyes.
Experts have provided insights into the potential impact of directly viewing a solar eclipse without certified protective filters. Patrick Laidlaw, an optometrist at Optegra Eye Clinic Sheffield, explains that direct exposure can damage the retina, potentially causing solar retinopathy. Prolonged viewing may even result in central vision loss.
The primary concern lies with the macula, a specialised area at the back of the eye responsible for central vision and containing a high concentration of photoreceptors. Intense light exposure can lead to toxicity that effectively burns this region, according to Laidlaw.
Historical data highlights the risks involved. Following the 1990s eclipse, approximately 70 individuals in the UK sought treatment for solar retinopathy, with about 40% admitting to viewing the eclipse for less than a minute, Yearwood reveals.
Symptoms of such damage often manifest with a delay, sometimes hours or even days after exposure. This delayed onset coupled with the absence of pain-due to the retina lacking pain receptors-means individuals may be unaware of injury immediately after viewing.
Warning signs to watch for include blurred vision, visual distortions, dark spots, and alterations in colour perception. Yearwood advises anyone experiencing these symptoms or sensing their vision is impaired to consult an optometrist promptly.
Laidlaw adds that heightened sensitivity to light and reduced vision are also important indicators warranting professional evaluation.
Eye specialists monitor for changes to the macula, as it is essential for discerning fine detail. Such damage may appear as a yellowish spot on the retinal cells.
Currently, no specific treatment exists for solar retinopathy, but in many cases, the eye can heal itself, much like recovery from sunburn. Yearwood notes the likelihood and duration of recovery depend on the extent of exposure.
He stresses that prolonged viewing increases the risk of irreversible vision damage and urges anyone concerned about their eye health following eclipse viewing to seek assessment from their local optician immediately.
