Professor Nick Maynard, a consultant surgeon with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, will share his extensive humanitarian medical work in Gaza at Salisbury Cathedral later this month. The event, titled “Bearing Witness,” features a conversation between Professor Maynard and the Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury.
Since first traveling to Palestine in 2008, Professor Maynard has made regular visits to Gaza, leading a team of Oxford-based specialists across surgery, medicine, paediatrics, and obstetrics every October to provide training for local medical students. Through his collaboration with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), he has performed cancer surgeries and delivered vital specialist training.
Following the escalation of conflict on October 7, 2023, Professor Maynard has led three Emergency Medical Teams into Gaza with MAP, including a recent four-week deployment at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis during June and July 2024. In recognition of his dedicated medical relief efforts, he was awarded the UK Government’s Humanitarian Medal by King Charles earlier this year.
