Somerset Council has revised its plans for the closure of a crucial route over the Somerset Levels this summer. The A361, a vital link connecting Taunton to Somerset villages such as Street, Glastonbury, and Langport, was originally set to be fully closed from late July to early September for traffic signal upgrades.
The closure, centered on the bridge over the River Parrett in Burrowbridge, has now been postponed to start on August 3, instead of July 23, after residents raised concerns. This adjustment means much of the early work will proceed with temporary traffic lights, reducing the impact during the peak summer holiday period.
The existing traffic signals, over 30 years old, are being replaced to prevent unexpected failures that could cause significant delays to motorists and pedestrians. The upgrade includes widening kerbs near the bridge to enhance pedestrian safety along the River Parrett Trail, refurbishing crossing points, repairing damaged kerbs, and resurfacing a long stretch of the A361 to provide smoother travel.

Councillor David Fothergill, representing the Monkton and North Curry division, expressed relief at the delayed closure, noting that the change avoids overlapping with other roadworks in Langport, which could have compounded traffic disruptions.
The roadworks will commence on June 29 with improvements under temporary traffic signals. The full road closure between August 3 and September 2 will be continuous in both directions. Nevertheless, access for residents and businesses, including The King Alfred Inn, will be maintained, and crossing facilities will remain operational.
During the closure, motorists heading east of Burrowbridge will be rerouted via a 21-mile diversion through Walford Cross, North Petherton, Bridgwater, and then along the A372. While some local roads may offer shorter alternative routes for smaller vehicles, these will not be officially marked as diversions.
