Owners are being urged to promptly seek veterinary advice if they observe certain signs and symptoms in their dogs. One subtle warning sign that might initially seem harmless is limping or the dog holding up a paw after being outdoors.
The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), a British veterinary charity, advises pet owners to watch for indications that their dog has been bitten or stung by insects. While many stings and bites can be managed at home if symptoms are mild, such as a dog holding up a paw, some cases require more urgent attention.
If your dog displays symptoms of an allergic reaction or has been stung multiple times, the PDSA recommends contacting a vet immediately. Should an incident occur outside of normal hours, consulting an emergency veterinary service is advised to determine if your pet needs urgent care. Delaying treatment can prolong your dog’s discomfort and pain.

Insect stings and bites can occur anywhere on a dog’s body but are most frequently found on the face and paws. Bee stings typically leave the stinger embedded in the skin, whereas wasp stings do not, allowing wasps to sting multiple times.
While outside, dogs may encounter a variety of insects capable of stinging or biting, including bees, ticks, mosquitoes, ants and flies. Such incidents are quite common during spring, summer and early autumn. Without prompt treatment, dogs can suffer significant pain and distress.
Symptoms of a mild reaction may be subtle but should not be overlooked. Similar to humans, some dogs can have allergic reactions to insect bites and stings. Signs of an allergic reaction often include swelling, particularly around the face, neck or throat.
The charity stresses the importance of immediate veterinary contact if any signs of an allergic response appear, especially swelling near the throat or multiple stings.
If the allergic reaction is mild, owners can take initial steps but must still be vigilant for worsening symptoms. It is critical to check for severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing or rapidly increasing swelling.
In all cases where your dog is experiencing respiratory difficulty or significant swelling, seek veterinary care without delay. If possible, call ahead to inform the practice of your arrival.
