As summer shines bright, there’s no better way to unwind than by watching a glorious sunset after a day spent outdoors. Whether you prefer relaxing in your garden or visiting a local park, the options are plentiful. But for those craving a bit more adventure, a hidden gem in Somerset promises some of the finest sunset views in the county, alongside breathtaking 360-degree panoramas.
Bristol-based hiking enthusiast Dan Butler recently shared his discovery of Crook Peak, calling it one of the best sunset spots in Somerset. Highlighting its accessibility even for those less inclined to strenuous walks, Dan recommended this stunning route via a popular TikTok video.
Starting from King’s Wood car park in Compton Bishop, this loop covers approximately 7.4km (4.6 miles) out and back. The trail meanders through the ancient King’s Wood before ascending over Wavering Down to reach the summit of Crook Peak. While the trek includes a few steep sections, it’s manageable for most walkers and well worth the effort.

At the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views that stretch across Somerset, the Quantock Hills, and even South Wales on clear days. The iconic Glastonbury Tor is also visible from this vantage point, adding a touch of magic to the scenery. Along the route, walkers will encounter grazing livestock, so it’s advised to keep dogs under close control and proceed carefully through the fields.
Known for its steep, rocky summit and stunning panoramic vistas, Crook Peak overlooks the Somerset Levels and the Bristol Channel, making it a must-visit for those seeking a short yet memorable hiking experience near Bristol. The route typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on pace and the elevation along the way.
For an unforgettable sunset adventure with remarkable views, set your sights on Crook Peak and soak in the natural beauty of Somerset.
