Struggle to Find NHS Dentists in Somerset

Securing an appointment with an NHS dentist in Somerset continues to be challenging, with only a small fraction of practices accepting new patients. A recent analysis of 116 Somerset practices found that 89% are not currently accepting adult patients, and the situation is particularly dire in the North East Somerset and Hanham, and Yeovil constituencies, where not a single NHS dentist is accepting new adult patients. The scenario also impacts children, with 87% of NHS dentists in the region not accepting patients aged 17 or under.

Many practices that claim to accept patients “when availability allows” may have lengthy waiting lists, leaving patients with limited options and often resorting to expensive private care. The issue is not exclusive to Somerset, as the lack of NHS dentists affects nearly 73% of practices across England.

The situation has led to 53 constituencies with a collective adult population of 4.8 million people having no available NHS dentist. Meanwhile, 62% of NHS dentists are not accepting children aged 17 or under, further exacerbating the problem.

The scarcity of NHS dentists has resulted in 88% of individuals without a dentist being unable to secure NHS dental care, with 20% turning to private dentistry and 70% doing nothing at all. This has raised concerns about the potential strain on the health service if dental issues go unchecked.

Despite promises by the Labour Party to address the crisis, minimal progress has been made. Although integrated care boards are expected to procure 700,000 additional urgent care appointments, tangible advancements have yet to materialize.

For those seeking NHS dental care in Somerset, accessing the necessary resources to secure an appointment presents a significant challenge.
