Storm-Wrecked Classroom Rebuilt Through Love and Community Spirit

Ilchester Community Primary School buzzes with excitement as pupils prepare to enter their new classroom, Ladybird Lodge, nearly a year after Storm Bert ripped the roof off their previous mobile classroom.

Named in heartfelt tribute to the late Miss Teresa Waterfield—a beloved teacher known for her passion, inclusivity, and the special care she showed every child—Ladybird Lodge stands proudly on the same site as the original. Miss Waterfield’s legacy continues to inspire the school community.

When Storm Bert struck Somerset in November 2024, the damage was swift and severe. Headteacher Mrs Michelle Mordue recalls receiving the alarming call that the classroom roof “was on the floor.” What followed was a powerful outpouring of support, as staff and local residents came together to secure the site and uplift each other during a challenging period.

“At moments like these,” Mrs Mordue reflects, “our mission of child-centred learning rooted deeply in community truly comes to life.”

In the storm’s aftermath, the school quickly adapted, relocating Year 1 pupils to alternative spaces and maintaining a seamless learning experience despite the disruption. Mrs Lucy McCurry, set to teach in the new classroom, praised the children’s resilience: “Though it was challenging, the kids never ceased to amaze us with their spirit.”

Thanks to insurance funding and partnership with the local authority, Portakabin was commissioned to build the new classroom. Site manager Douglas became a familiar and appreciated figure, recently receiving a personalized hard hat and thank-you letters from grateful pupils.

Ladybird Lodge is thoughtfully designed with modern amenities including accessible ground-level entry, contemporary toilets, and advanced heating and air conditioning systems. Every feature aims to create a secure, comfortable environment that nurtures learning and wellbeing.

Pupils eagerly explored their new classroom ahead of the official opening. “It’s amazing!” one exclaimed. “I can’t wait to move in,” said another.

As part of the Preston Primary Academy Trust, Ilchester Community Primary continues enhancing its facilities, recently unveiling a new Reception outdoor area and planning future projects centered on nature-based learning and outdoor discovery.

Mrs Mordue expressed profound gratitude, “We thank every member of our wonderful community. Your kindness and support during such a difficult time have given our children a place to feel proud and excited to learn each day.”
