Taunton Rugby Club has suffered extensive damage following severe flooding caused by Storm Chandra, prompting an urgent appeal for community support. The floodwaters completely submerged the club’s pitch and key facilities, resulting in estimated damages nearing £19,000.
Club President Neil Symons expressed the gravity of the situation in a statement on 28 January: “Taunton Rugby Club has been a vital part of our community for 150 years. Every week, around 600 people—including players, volunteers, families, supporters, and local groups—come together across 16 teams and numerous community activities.”
He continued, “On 27 January 2026, unprecedented flooding struck after local streams and rivers overflowed. Our clubhouse suffered severe impact, with several downstairs meeting rooms, the conservatory bar, and essential commercial spaces inundated.”

The flooding has forced the club to operate with limited facilities during one of its busiest weeks. The damage has already caused over £10,000 in lost revenue, with additional financial strains from repairs and replacements on the horizon. The club estimates needing £5,000 to replace damaged carpets, £1,000 for stock and items replacement, £2,000 for repainting and restoration, and £1,000 for equipment hire.
Symons emphasized the importance of community support: “Any donation, no matter the size, will make a significant difference. If you can’t donate, sharing this message will also help us reach others who can support our recovery.”
The rugby club is more than just a sports venue—it serves as a community hub where friendships are built and memories made. With collective support, Taunton Rugby Club hopes to recover and continue its role in the community for years to come.
Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for further rain in Somerset for 29 January, raising concerns about additional flooding, travel disruptions, road closures, and isolated villages in the region.
In under 24 hours, the community’s response has been heartening, with over £4,000 raised from 66 generous donors. Supporters continue to rally behind Taunton Rugby Club during this challenging time.
