Taunton Rugby Club has been devastated by severe flooding caused by Storm Chandra, leaving the entire pitch and clubhouse underwater. The storm, which struck on 27 January 2026, resulted in an estimated £19,000 in damages and significant disruption to the club’s operations.
Club President Neil Symons spoke out on the morning of 28 January, highlighting the central role the club has played in the community for 150 years. “Every week, around 600 players, volunteers, families, and local groups come together through 16 teams and numerous community activities,” Symons said. “This is more than just a sports club — it’s a community hub.”
The floodwaters affected key areas within the clubhouse, including downstairs meeting rooms, the conservatory bar, and important commercial spaces. As a result, the club is operating with much-reduced facilities during one of its busiest weeks of the year.

“This disaster has already caused over £10,000 in lost revenue, with additional costs for repairs and replacements,” Symons explained. The club estimates needing £5,000 to replace damaged carpets, £1,000 for stock and items, £2,000 for painting and restoration, and £1,000 for equipment hire, bringing the total loss to around £19,000.
Despite the challenges, the club remains hopeful and is calling on the community for support. “Any donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference. If you can’t donate, sharing our appeal helps us reach others who may be able to assist,” Symons added.
The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for additional rain across Somerset on 29 January, raising concerns of further flooding and potential travel disruptions.
In response, the community has already shown strong support: within 24 hours, the club’s fundraising campaign has raised over £4,000 from 66 donors, demonstrating the resilience and solidarity surrounding Taunton Rugby Club.
