Storm Chandra: Comprehensive List of Road Closures Amid Severe Flooding in the South West

The South West is grappling with widespread flooding as Storm Chandra unleashes relentless rain and strong winds across the region. An amber weather alert and numerous flood warnings have been issued, prompting road closures, potential flooding to homes and businesses, and anticipated school disruptions.

Heavy rainfall has already inundated key routes in Somerset, Devon, Dorset, and southeast Cornwall. Meteorologists predict up to 50mm of rain in much of these areas, with elevated locations such as Dartmoor receiving as much as 80mm. Winds could reach 70 mph in exposed spots, exacerbating dangerous travel conditions.

As the storm continues through the night into Tuesday morning, further road closures and travel interruptions are expected. Somerset, already saturated by persistent wet weather, faces heightened risk of flooding and disrupted transportation networks.

Authorities are urging drivers to avoid flooded roads and stay updated on travel conditions. Public transport delays are also likely due to the severe weather.

Current major road closures include:

  • A30 East Devon: Closed both ways from B3174/B3180 near Ottery St Mary to B3184 near Exeter Airport due to standing water making the road impassable.

  • A303 Somerset/Devon border: Closed both directions between the A30 at Upottery and the A358 at Horton Cross, with National Highways and police managing floodwater clearance.

  • A35 Dorset: Closed both ways between the A352 Max Gate junction and B3150 Stinsford Roundabout near Dorchester following surface water flooding.

As Storm Chandra continues to impact the South West, residents and commuters should remain vigilant. This situation is evolving, and further updates on closures and conditions will be provided as they become available.
