Steakhouse with Royal Chef Opens to Rave Reviews Near Yeovil

The Podymore Inn and Steakhouse, a new culinary gem near Yeovil, celebrated a sensational opening last month. Founded by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Lady Sharon Carter, the steakhouse quickly established itself as a local favorite, prompting the duo to expand their staff within just a week.

Sharon, 52, expressed her amazement: “I’ve never had a pub that took off so successfully.”

The menu boasts an impressive array of steaks — from classic T-bones and ribeyes to impressive tomahawks and sirloins. For guests seeking alternatives, there’s a variety of burgers, ribs, wings, and even aubergine steak for vegetarian diners. Looking ahead, Sharon hopes to launch “Wild Wednesdays,” featuring exotic meats like water buffalo and ostrich for adventurous palates.

The team behind the Podymore brings a wealth of experience. Sharon, who began her career in the Royal Navy, trained as a chef in Tennessee in 2003. “Before that, I couldn’t even boil an egg!” she laughs. She has since honed her skills across the US, Spain, and now Somerset. Kevin, 56, oversees front-of-house operations, while their head chef, Wayne Flynn, boasts an impressive resume as a former royal chef, having cooked for King Charles III, Prince William, and Prince Harry.

Adding to the steakhouse’s charm is its intriguing location. The building first opened as The Butcher’s Arms in 1861 and is rumored to be haunted. Sharon recounts a mysterious night when their ‘open’ sign flew across the bar without explanation and speaks of often seeing unexplained shadows.

While the decision to open the steakhouse was partly inspired by “a mid-life crisis,” Sharon admits, it’s been a resounding success. Since opening on June 20, the Podymore has earned glowing four- and five-star reviews. One customer raved, “The best steak I’ve had! Kevin and Sharon are a delight. Cannot recommend enough.” Another praised the “carefully prepared dishes, excellent desserts, and friendly owners.”

Beyond food, the couple plans to connect with the community through upcoming events. On Saturday, August 9, the steakhouse will host a fundraiser afternoon for Breast Cancer Now, featuring live music. The cause is especially close to Sharon’s heart as a cancer survivor.

In September, the Podymore will serve as the starting point for the ‘Pass Wide and Slow’ procession through the village. The event, set for Saturday, September 6 at noon, will be supported by local police and MP Sarah Dyke to raise awareness of road safety.

The Podymore Inn and Steakhouse welcomes guests seven days a week—open noon to 11pm Monday through Saturday, and noon to 10:30pm on Sundays. Campervans are also welcome to park overnight, making it a convenient destination for travelers.
