Special Needs School Near Former Somerset Shopping Centre Approved for Expansion

Inaura School, a special needs education provider near the former Somerset shopping centre in Street, has received approval to expand its facilities. Since late 2023, the school has been operating one of its four sites at 12 Leigh Road after converting existing office space, following permission granted by Mendip District Council earlier that year.

In September, Inaura School applied to extend into the neighboring property at 12a Leigh Road, located behind the Crispin Shopping Centre. The shopping centre is set to be demolished soon to make way for a new retirement complex featuring 45 extra care apartments and 11 retirement cottages.

With the transition of local governance to Somerset Council in April 2023, the new council has now approved Inaura’s expansion plans. The additional space is expected to be operational by spring or summer 2026. Both properties, 12 and 12a Leigh Road, have historical significance, originally forming part of Strode School, established by Clarks in 1925 as part of a centennial philanthropic initiative.

Inaura School, which operates as a not-for-profit charity, places each pupil through education, health, and care plans (EHCPs) developed collaboratively with families, the council, and the school. The expansion will accommodate four additional pupils and enable the hiring of four more teachers, reinforcing the school’s commitment to intensive one-on-one support tailored to each student’s needs.

A school spokesperson commented, “There are no adverse impacts resulting from this proposal, and the need for specialized educational facilities like ours provides significant benefits to society. Due to the school’s wide catchment area and the nature of its services, accessibility and suitable premises are essential. We are proud to have found this additional building to better serve our students.”

The planning permission was granted by council officers through delegated powers, rather than a public committee decision. The expansion is slated to open within the first half of 2026, ensuring enhanced educational support for students requiring specialized care.
