JD Wetherspoon has confirmed the unexpected closure of The Water Gate, a beloved pub located on Barnstaple’s waterfront in Devon. The pub is set to shut its doors on Sunday, 9th November.
A spokesperson for the chain cited “commercial reasons” for the decision to close this popular venue on Barnstaple Strand. Eddie Gershon, a Wetherspoon representative, expressed understanding of the disappointment this news brings to both loyal customers and staff.
“We can confirm the forthcoming closure of The Water Gate,” Gershon stated. “While it is unfortunate, Wetherspoon occasionally needs to close or sell pubs for commercial reasons, and this is one such case.”

Despite the closure, Gershon reassured patrons that The Panniers, Wetherspoon’s other pub in Barnstaple, will continue to operate without interruption.
Earlier reports indicated that The Water Gate was on the market during the summer months, fueling speculation about its future.
Local residents have shared mixed reactions to the announcement. One regular customer told DevonLive, “I don’t understand why they would shut it—it’s busy on weekends. I come here several times a week to catch up with friends. This closure will be a real loss for the town.”
Others pointed to broader societal changes as a factor, noting, “People just can’t afford to go to the pub as often, and social habits have shifted. It’s reflective of wider changes in society.”
While The Water Gate’s closure marks the end of an era for Barnstaple’s waterfront community, The Panniers remains a vibrant hub for locals.
