South West Beach Kynance Cove Named Among Europe’s Best, Surpassing Bulgaria and Malta

Kynance Cove, a breathtaking beach situated on the eastern side of Mount’s Bay in Cornwall, has been recognized as one of Europe’s finest, outshining well-known destinations in Bulgaria and Malta. Renowned for its turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations, Kynance Cove secured an impressive 26th place in a prestigious ranking of Europe’s top beaches.

While the World’s 50 Best Beaches recently crowned Entalula Beach in the Philippines as the world’s greatest, Europe’s best beaches featured well-known Mediterranean gems — yet notably excluded Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach and Malta’s Golden Bay. Despite fierce competition, Kynance Cove stood out as the UK’s “warmest” beach, boasting average winter temperatures of 11.5°C, making it a favorite year-round destination.

Time Out writer and Cornwall native India Lawrence commented on Kynance’s allure: “With fine white sand, bright turquoise waters, and dramatic rock formations jutting from the sea, on a good day it’s easy to mistake this beach for somewhere far more exotic, like Thailand.” She recalls childhood visits spent exploring its rock pools and mysterious caves, rumored to have been used by smugglers centuries ago. Lawrence advises visitors to arrive early, as the National Trust car park often fills by 11 am.

Europe’s top 5 beaches in the ranking included Fteri Beach (Greece) at number one, followed by Cala Macarella (Spain), Cala dei Gabbiani (Italy), Kaputas (Turkey), and Porto Katsiki (Greece).

Kynance Cove has a history of acclaim, appearing on the list in previous years and earning recognition from travel guides such as Lonely Planet, which named it one of Cornwall’s seven best beaches. Located west of the UK’s southernmost point on the Lizard Peninsula, the cove offers visitors sparkling waters and hidden nooks perfect for exploration.

Reporter Phoebe Cornish described her visit as an enchanting experience: “The waters shimmer with a brilliance that seems almost unbelievable, even compared to tropical regions.” She praised the cove’s accessibility, noting that the gentle descent from the National Trust car park to the sands takes about 10 minutes, providing “uninterrupted vistas of crystal-clear waters.” The peaceful retreats and natural beauty make Kynance Cove a must-see for anyone exploring the British coastline.
