Somerset Council is set to enhance its innovative Slinky demand-responsive transport service by adding seven new minibuses—a move fueled by the “tremendous success” of the service since its relaunch 18 months ago.
The Digital Slinky service enables residents, especially those in areas poorly served by traditional public transport, to pre-book rides for essential trips such as shopping and medical appointments. Since its reopening in May 2024, funded by central government, the service has proudly completed over 10,000 journeys across Somerset.
To expand capacity and streamline maintenance, the council is acquiring six new wheelchair-accessible diesel minibuses, each equipped with 16 seats and adaptable for wheelchair users by folding up seats as needed. In addition, a seventh electric minibus will join the fleet to support Frome’s local bus route 30.

These diesel minibuses will primarily serve communities in Taunton, Wellington, and former Sedgemoor District towns like Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Cheddar, Highbridge, and North Petherton. Notably, the entire purchase will be funded through Department for Transport grants, ensuring no financial burden on local taxpayers.
Lee Jones, Somerset’s Transport Operations Manager, highlighted the thoughtful design of the new vehicles: “Our new minibuses allow flexibility for wheelchair passengers without causing scheduling delays which previously occurred when adapting seating had to be done manually off-site. This means more reliable, equitable service for all users.”
Jones also emphasized the operational benefits: “These additions reduce downtime for repairs and maintenance, ensuring the Slinky service can maintain its high standards of delivery.”
The Digital Slinky forms a vital part of Somerset Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), which aims to upgrade public transport through capital projects—such as the upcoming Taunton transport hub—and initiatives like keeping Taunton’s park and ride services affordable to boost ridership.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, praised the Slinky’s impact: “Rural demand-responsive transport is essential in Somerset. This service provides a vital lifeline for those without easy access to conventional buses or private cars. The success in Somerton and Langport is a landmark achievement. Digital Slinky is a reliable, affordable, and easy-to-book transport alternative open to everyone.”
